URBAN SENSING // COLLABORATION
Emerging technologies are capable of enriching public life in ways we are only beginning to explore. Our multi-disciplinary collaboration between UCLA's cityLAB, CENS, Design | Media Arts, and Theater Film and Television Department will investigate roles that sensor networks can play in the public space of urban streets. This pilot project will result in a series of physical storefront displays designed by Architecture, Design, and TFT students to engage the street and its occupants. Specifically, the project will test a range of readily available sensor technologies, emphasizing those that are interactive and peer-to-peer. Sensing technologies will be geared toward innovative data gathering and interpretation that is real-time and geo-spatial. Using creative means of engagement, new forms of public art will be examined that augment everyday citizen’s participation in the public sphere.
